Players fight weather at Rocanville's inaugural tourney

The team of Chris Istace of Moosomin and Cory Stupak of Yorkton fired a two-over-par 31 to win the inaugural Rocanville Disc Golf Club Team Doubles Classic on Sunday, June 26.

The event hosted a thin field of competitors fighting stiff winds, rain and extremely wet ground conditions at Rocanville's 18-hole course located just south of town. After golfing the front-nine, the players were flighted into teams, then continued through to the back nine. Although the tournament was scheduled to include 36-holes of play, the event was suspended after 18 due to rain.

Istace/Stupak fell behind early with a bogey on Hole 11, but birdie deuces on 13 and 14 pulled them equal with the Yorkton pairing of Doug Kerr and Trevor Lyons. The difference in the match came at Hole 17, where Istace/Stupak nailed a par-saving putt out of the bush while Kerr/Lyons dropped a bogey.

Kerr/Lyons finished the day with a score of 32, while Moosomin's Joshua Istace and Yorkton's Calvin Daniels placed third with a 36.

The Team Doubles Classic was the first event to be hosted at the new Rocanville facility, which runs along the Rocanville Cross Country Ski Club's trail system about two kilometres south of the town on Webster Cemetery Road.

Despite the lower-than-expected number of entries, the tournament had incredible support from area sponsors.

Lunch and prizes were provided by CDI Injury Recovery Centre, while the remaining prize contributors included Universe Satellite Sales, Glenda's Travel at Travel Only and Kenhome Construction from Rocanville; Jeannot Electric, Stand Up Construction, Mullett's Rona, Evolution Hair Studio and Twin Auto in Moosomin; and Laurie's Construction 2007 in Whitewood.

Members of the Rocanville Disc Golf Club will continue to meet at 6 pm every Tuesday evening for league play through to the end of September. Guests and members of the public wanting to try the sport are welcome to join in the fun.
