Weather challenges at Bredenbury '17

The weather added a definite element of added challenge for disc golfers converging on Bredenbury Saturday.

A chill wind, occasional bouts of mist and showers, and sporadic flashes of sunshine were all experienced at the Home Inn & Suites Disc Golf Tournament.

After two rounds on the 12-tonal course the top five emerged; Duncan Holness, Josh Gregory and 12-year-old Josh Istace topping the field, with the Yorkton duo of Calvin Daniels and Trevor Lysons tied for fourth, making the final-round of four, a five-man challenge.

Holness, from Percival, SK., had been runner-up at three previous Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament Series events, but Saturday he was not to be denied. He would throw a plus-one 109 through 36 to coast to an easy win.

The rest of the final-five found the course and weather a tougher tandem to conquer. Gregory, from Melville, would finish a distant second with a plus-15 123.

Istace, from Moosomin, threw a 130 plus-22, chased by Daniels at a plus-25, 133, with Lyons a plus-26, 134.

Holness said he was able to stay-within himself to top the field in changeable conditions.

“I would say that my mental game is starting to be my strength,” he explained. “I get over bad holes relatively quickly, and good holes don't boost my confidence too high.”

That was important Saturday.

“The key to winning at Bredenbury was to simply relax,” said Holness. “It's a very difficult course for me, and I had to get over that in order to succeed. Good disc selection helped, too.”

Not that all went well for Holness would parked a drive on number five on the roof of the old school.

“The greatest challenge that I faced, in terms of throwing the course well, was my tendency to overthrow holes,” he admitted. “Bredenbury punishes mistakes in a big way, and the longer you throw, the more likely it is that mistakes will be m

ade.”

The top two finishers at the Home Inn & Suites Tournament, as PADG members, earn spots in the Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge, to be held at Asessippi Beach and Campground Oct. 15.

In addition to the final five Saturday a number of other special awards were handed out.

The Yorkton Dodge Best Drive award went to Gregory, with the Asessippi Beach and Campground Closest to the Pin award going to Chris Istace.

Lyons also had a chance at the Fountain Tire Putting Award, but missed all three tries to get a disc putter through a tire.

The event attracted throwers from as far away as Regina, Percival and Moosomin.
