Grain Millers Trilogy Challenge upcoming

The third annual Trilogy Challenge Disc Golf Tournament is upcoming in Yorkton with a number of exciting additions.

The changes start with Grain Millers coming on board as naming sponsors.

“When we were approached we were quick to partner with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf,” said Grain Miller representative Terry Tyson. “There has been a lot of interest and growth in the sport and we were happy to be a part of that.”

Trevor Lyons, tournament chair with the PADG said taking on a major sponsor bodes well for continuing to have the Yorkton tournament as one of the major events of the season.

“Having Grain Millers as a partner certainly raises the profile of the event, and is allowing us to add some exciting new features to the tournament,” he said.

The Trilogy Challenge is always popular as players receive three golf discs exclusive to the tournament, which they use in the event, and also take home at the end of the day.

“There are three major disc lines behind the event, Westside, Dynamic and Latitude 64 and their creation of the popular format and continued support is a huge support to local clubs,” said Lyons. “It’s always fun and exciting to get to throw new discs which are not yet available to the general public.”

However, since the discs must be ordered and shipped, the deadline to enter the Grain Millers event in Yorkton is fast-approaching with sign-up required by Aug. 5. Players can register online at http://dgscene.com/grainmillers2017 for a cost of $35 US.

This year the event will offer four divisions; youth (16 and under), Shoe La La Women’s Division, masters (50-plus), and the open division. The open division is where the Trilogy Challenge Champion will be crowned, and some additional special awards will be available.

The additional divisions are to encourage more diverse play and fairness.

That was a key reason Shoe La La became involved.

"It's important to support local events when possible, and with the interest disc golf is generating, it felt like a natural to get involved in an effort to attract more women to become involved in a fun, outdoor sport activity," said Shoe La La Footwear and Fashions owner Lorie Antony.

Calvin Daniels, president of the PADG said they are currently seeking sponsors for the masters and youth divisions.

A player may opt to enter whichever category they desire if they fit criteria. So the youth, women, or master-aged player may opt to play in the open portion of the tournament.

After the opening round of 18 the open division will be split into two ‘flights’ based on scores.

The top four finishers in the top flight after 36 will go out for a final championship 18.

Top finishers in each division will be awarded prizes.

There are also a few new ‘specials’ at the Yorkton event.

All first time competitors will have their name in a draw for the ‘Rocen Autosports Special’. The draw is a way to encourage first time players to get involved.

The Grain Millers Trilogy Challenge will be the second day event in what is a dual tournament weekend with the Credit Union Cup being held in Springside Saturday, Aug. 26.

“Having a two event weekend is great for travelling players. They have a chance to play two events, and that also means a double opportunity to qualify for our PADG Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge,” said PADG Chair Calvin Daniels.

The Champions Challenge which will be held Oct. 15 at the Asessippi National Disc Golf Course, brings the top two PADG-member finishers from a season-long series of tournaments.

“The Farrell Agencies event will have the best-of-the-best playing for an exclusive jacket, as well as other prizes, and a chance to drive away a new car if they can toss an ace on number-17 thanks to a sponsorship from Yorkton Dodge,” said Daniels.
